Sports Betting in Nigeria

After the 2024 Supreme Court shift, the licence that matters is state or FCT paper — match the Lagos or Abuja list, or your own state board. Then see which of those books settles naira by bank, USSD, or OPay / PalmPay / Moniepoint in the same name you KYC’d.

How it feels on the ground

Saturday in Lagos is Premier League first; Super Eagles nights empty the street. Most people fund in naira through a bank app, USSD, an agent, or a wallet they already hold — not a foreign card page that times out. Open the regulator list for where you are sitting, then deposit only with a book on that list that pays out in your KYC name.

Who regulates it

Federation of State Gaming Regulators of Nigeria (FSGRN)

State-regulator forum working on a reciprocity certificate across member states. Confirm membership and current rules before relying on it.

Operators we can pin

Familiar Nigerian-market brands that appeared on Lagos and/or FCT lists when we last checked (see the review date on this page). A Lagos listing does not automatically cover Kano or Rivers. Re-check the live register for the state you are in before you deposit.

Popular sports

English football is the default slip. CAF and World Cup qualifiers pull the country in. Local league interest is real but thinner on television. Basketball and boxing show up on weekends. Virtuals and crash-style games sit next to the sportsbook in a lot of shops.

How payments work

Currency is NGN. Fund and withdraw in naira, same name as the KYC. A site that only talks euros or crypto is usually not the local licensed product, even if the logo looks familiar.

Naira bank transfer and USSD

The everyday rail. Instant transfer into a betting wallet, or USSD when data is expensive. Withdrawals usually return to a Nigerian bank account in the same name as the book KYC.

OPay

Primary fintech wallet for many bettors. Books that accept OPay cleanly get used. Support varies — check the cashier before you deposit.

PalmPay

Second major wallet rail. Same-name rule. Support varies by book — check the cashier before you deposit.

Moniepoint

Agent / merchant-heavy wallet ecosystem; increasingly a consumer deposit rail. Support varies by book — check the cashier before you deposit.

Agent shops and cash-in

Still the on-ramp in markets and campuses. Branded agents only; keep the receipt. Unbranded “I can load it for you” is how people lose money.

Cards

Some books show Mastercard or Visa. Many Nigerian cards still fail on betting descriptors. A card logo is not proof the cashier works for your bank.

Responsible gambling

Set deposit and loss limits where the licensed app offers them; use self-exclusion if you need a hard stop. Prefer regulator complaint paths over Instagram “recovery agents.” Helplines we have opened sit on the house responsible-gambling page.

Frequently asked questions

Is sports betting legal in Nigeria?+

Yes, for adults, on an operator that holds a current licence from the relevant state board or the FCT office. It is not a free-for-all offshore market. After the November 2024 Supreme Court judgment, a leftover “NLRC licensed” line on a website is not enough on its own.

Do I need a different book in Lagos and in Abuja?+

Not always — several large brands show up on both the Lagos and FCT lists — but you should still match the brand to the place you are using it. Reciprocity across states is being built. It is not something to assume from a homepage banner.

Are winnings taxed?+

Nigeria treats a lot of betting activity as personal income rather than a special “sports betting tax” at the punter level. Withholding and operator levies are a different layer. If the amount matters, ask a Nigerian tax practitioner. We will not guess your return.

Can I use a foreign book that takes naira?+

Taking naira is not the same as holding a Nigerian licence. Unlicensed sites can take a deposit and then stall a withdrawal. If the brand is not on the state or FCT list, treat it as unlicensed for that place.
